Inktober Challenge 2023

How Action Sports are Imbedded in my Brain

I’ve made it very clear through this website that I love three things. Nature, Action Sports, and Action Sports in Nature. This year I made two commitments to the Inktober Challenge 2023. First, only Micron pens and sephia/light grey markers. I also did a Marker and Pen challenge in 2021. Secondly, I would only share my love for outdoor sports. Mountain biking, surfing, windsurfing, paddleboarding, BMX, snowboarding, fly fishing, and camping. These activities are ingrained in my mind that most of these pieces were drawn entirely from my many memories of playing outside.

Medium Challenges

I’m no stranger to markers and pens. In fact, they’re one of my favorite mediums. The only challenge that I found was with the quality of the brush nibs. When using the same two markers every day applying layers and layers, they don’t hold up pretty well. Half way I had to buy another marker. Not because it was running out of ink, but because the nib was freighing to disarray. Now on a mission for a better marker. I guess I’ll be taking some road trips to Sam Flax in Orlando more frequently.

What I Liked About the Inktober Challenge 2023

I’m sure that I’ll say this again next year. But the Inktober Challenge 2023 has been one of my favorites ever. It might be because I not only re-lived some wonderful old memories. Or that the I’ve been doing many of these activities for so long, that I could envision every trail, wave, jump, and piece of gear. Many of my favorite pieces are the POV (point of view) drawings. They’re the memories that are most vivid from years on the water and on two wheels.

I just realized that I didn’t include any skateboarding drawings. I have in past Inktober Challenges. Odd. In one of my Instagram Posts, one of my aunts mentioned how I love my bike. That’s an understatement. I LOVE all of my bikes. As well as my surfboards, sails, paddleboards, paddles, and fly rods. They’re all what get me out to see the beauty that nature gives us. (yes, I’m starting to weep as I type this). These drawings show my love for nature and how I see it.
