A Short Walk Through Ketchikan Alaska
At the last stop on our Disney Alaska cruise we decided to just take it easy and walk through the tourist area and make our way to the salmon trail. Though it was too early to see the salmon running (and the bears hunting) we still had a beautiful walk along the creek and made a stop at the Totem Heritage Center.
We did a lot of shopping in Ketchikan. In fact, this was the only stop in Alaska where we bought anything. Originals, prints, postcards, stickers, pins, and t-shirts all designed by local Alaskan and Canadian artists.
While I was inside an art gallery and my wife was sitting outside enjoying the atmosphere, an aspiring sculptor that saw my cameras harnessed on my body approached me. He was spending the summer in Alaska and asked about my photography. We spoke for a few minutes about art, nature, and the area. He had only been there for a week and had only seen eagles in the area. I told him about the bear that I had seen in Haines a few days earlier. I’m envious to know that he will see so much this summer as the salmon season begins.
Yes, it was cold and rainy the whole time, but it was also one of the most amazing places that I’ve ever visited. I just can’t imagine how things would have been if I came later in the summer where salmon swimming upstream and bears everywhere are the norm. The same way that i never get bored of seeing gators in Florida, I could never get bored of seeing eagles, whales, otters, and bears all of the time.
I haven’t even left, but I can’t wait to come back. Maybe in August next time.
