Golden Hour Bunnies at the Helen & Allan Cruickshank Sanctuary
I’m leaving for the Pacific Northwest in a few days and won’t be back until late-June. I figure that it’ll start getting overwhelmingly hot by then and I won’t want to go out on shoots until fall. So I decided to go on a golden hour shoot looking for rabbits. When you frequent wildlife areas, you kinda know who will be out and when. I was correct on this shoot. The rabbits were out in full force.
Most of these bunnies aren’t very trusting of people. So I had to walk slowly and try not to make any sudden moves. Rabbits at more populated parks, like where I frequently go MTBing and play disc golf, the rabbits are more trusting of humans. These rabbits aren’t. Maybe people feed them at Whickham Park. But what do you feed a wild rabbit? They do get pretty squirrelly when I see them on the trails. I guess I too would run away if a giant on a bicycle came around a corner at full speed. The tortoises don’t care at all. They just stare at me as I ride by and greet them.
I sometimes see marsh hares at the sanctuary, but since it hasn’t rained much lately, they’re likely closer to the pond and canals that separate the sanctuary from the residential areas and the road.
Not that there weren’t other animals around, but I just didn’t feel like taking pictures of the scrub jays, woodpeckers, and mocking birds as it was getting dark. I have come to this area to take silhouette shots around this time of the day in the past. They’re fun shots, but today was all about the bunnies.
